The true reasons for prohibiting the ordination of women

In order to explain the fact that the Church prohibits women from being ordained, it argues that Jesus only chose men as apostles and that the Church is merely continuing this tradition. This thesis is explained on this site in an article entitled "Why ban the ordination of women."
It is worth looking beyond this type of communication and investigating at some length the real causes of this ancient ostracism.

The role of women in the Jewish religion

We need to accept that in the West it took centuries for women in civil society to have the same rights as those granted to men. For centuries, the Catholic Church has taught that women are inferior to men. Simply refering to the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor (d. 1274) shows proof of this.

But let’s go back to the inferiority of women, an inferiority imposed by the habits and customs in place at the time of Christ.

Only male children receive "the sign of the covenant" with God through circumcision performed on the eighth day after birth. Only boys were allowed to learn Hebrew, the language of the sacred texts. Only men could become rabbis.

Why were women separated from Jewish rituals?

The periodic impurity of women

In the Jewish religion, the prohibition of women from being involved in affairs of the altar is explained not only by their inferiority but more fundamentally by of their periodic impurity. In Leviticus 15, 19-24, it is written: “When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening. Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. Whoever touches her bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Whoever touches anything she sits on must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Whether it is the bed or anything she was sitting on, when anyone touches it, he will be unclean till evening. If a man lies with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean”.

Other bans similarly condemn women to isolation after childbirth (Lev, 12, 2-5). "If a woman conceives and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days. As at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean.  And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying. She shall not touch anything holy, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying are completed. But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her menstruation. And she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty-six days."

How then can we imagine that women could possibly have access to the same functions as men? A woman who lost her blood was impure, no one could approach her. To touch or be touched by her was prohibited.

Under these conditions, it is normal that Jesus chose only men as apostles to proclaim the Good News. These men had to speak in public and this was conduct then prohibited to women in Palestine. If Jesus had chosen women as apostles, they wouldn’t have been able to do anything in the Jewish environment. The Gospels report that a group of women followed Jesus and listened to his speeches, just like the other disciples, but they couldn’t speak in a synagogue.

And yet Jesus fought against these bans

We know that Jesus thought that it wasn’t necessary to follow Jewish law to the letter. He touched lepers, he touched women during impurity (when menstruating), he ate without washing his hands ... didn’t he also say (Mt 15, 11) that it is not what enters the mouth of man which is unclean, but the words coming out of it? In St Mark 7, 18-20, it is even more explicit: " Do you not perceive, that whatever thing from without enters into the man, it cannot defile him; Because it enters not into his heart, but into the belly, and goes out into the draught, purging all meats? It is that which comes out of the man, that defiles the man."

Regarding the issue of the Sabbath, the Pharisees accused Jesus' disciples of picking corn on the Sabbath. Again, Jesus rejected the literal and fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible. He denied their accusations and claimed that (12.8 Mt and Mk 2:27) "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

The Pharisees saw another violation of the law in the healings that Jesus performed on the Sabbath,. (Luke 14, 1-24) “On one occasion when Jesuswas going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely.  Just then, in front of him, there was a man who had dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, “Is it lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?”  But they were silent. So Jesustook him and healed him, and sent him away. Then he said to them, “If one of you has a childor an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?” And they could not reply to this."

But there were impassable limits

Although Jesus challenged many of the interdictions, he couldn’t put himself in an impossible situation and so he only chose men as apostles of the Jews, men who were circumcised according to Jewish tradition. If he had chosen uncircumcised apostles, they would not have been allowed to eat with the other disciples as Jewish law forbade a Jew to eat at the same table as the uncircumcised.

Even if Jesus was the Son of God, he had to bow down to the constraints of Jewish society. His parents had had him circumcised, he spoke the local language and not Greek, he practised the Sabbath, he celebrated Passover, he went to the temple...

As a result, his apostles had to be men and not women.

If Aramaic was the language of Jesus, it was not the language used to convey the Gospel to the world because the circumstances of the day meant that other languages were used. The apostles were circumcised Jews but this requirement was not necessary to spread the Good News in the pagan world.

Now that women have become equal to men, nothing prevents them from having access to the same functions of worship than those attributed to men. Everything evolves.

Who would dare claim that sociological elements represent the divine will? If the answer is positive, then the Church should have continued to only have Jews as Christians, men who are circumcised, speak Aramaic, apply Jewish law, eat kosher...

It is up to everyone to make objective criticism of the merits found in removing women from all ecclesiastical power.
Is it really acceptable that what caused the separation of women from worship at the time of Jesus Christ - periodic impurity - can still have an influence in today’s 21st century? The fact that the Catholic Church continues to uphold such a thesis is quite simply unbelievable.

Summarising the evolution of the cases of paedophilia in the Belgian Catholic Church is not easy, as so many events have taken place over the past few years. We will therefore simply underline the main events. The most complete history of events can be found in the parliamentary committee’s report,, which treated the subject. We have drawn heavily on this resource. Various commissions are often referred to when talking about paedophilia within the Belgian Catholic Church. There were two internal commissions that were set up by the Church, one following the other. The first was the Halberghe Commission (2000 - February 2009) and the second, the Adriaenssens Commission (March – June 2010). Furthermore, the Parliamentary Commission, referred to above, worked from October 28th 2010 to March 31st 2011.

right now, like many things, im clueless as to THE answer, everyone has an opinion, and in some countries those opinions can be expressed without persecution, so its great to share and ponder and improve life and for all creatures and mankind who live it.
Mysteries are part of the understanding. Gods will isnt understandable to ours. So if I don't follow some things does it change everything? well I cant follow everything and agree with everything bc its breeds totalitarianism and absolutism to power of man not unknowing and living lifes experiences by doing ones best to please God.
I think we will not ever know anything new and better unless someone experiences it and gives testimony. A new path, shorter more direct, less dangerous, found by first to cut through the hedgerows and leave the maze? I dont know. i'm catholic. Not ery good one Im afraid. But everyday, everyday, I serve the poor and misguided. And I can just say..Be the change you want to see...if you want a lady Pope, then try to be that person, maybe you will inspire the one Ordained by God to be that person. Dont just write but be. Share the Love of God with yourself and others by accepting service to others in His name.

"Although Jesus challenged many of the interdictions, he couldn’t put himself in an impossible situation and so he only chose men as apostles of the Jews, men who were circumcised according to Jewish tradition."

Wrong, Jesus bucked the system many times in scripture. Jesus chose Jews because God promised to send the Christ to the Jews. Jesus chose men because he wanted to chose men. He could have chosen women if he wanted. Even a good Jewish woman would have been a better choice in the eyes of the Jews than Matthew the tax collector. Jesus revealed to the Apostles that salvation was open to all, even the gentiles. So that is why you don't have to be Jewish to be a priest.

Even though women are equal to men, they are not the same as men. Jesus clearly chose men and men only. He had many faithful and devoted women disciples.

And the idea that the Catholic Church excludes women because of their menstrual cycle is too ridiculous for words.

To all who dare to amend the True Teachings of Christ and replace the authority of His Church with there own.

Why on earth are you questioning the authority of the HIstoric Roman Catholic Church? Do you not know that to do so incurrs automatic excommunication. You are damned. It is not easy to write that, but it is true. St Justin Martyr, who was trained by St John wrote "No Schismatic, Heretic or Apostate can enter Heaven"

The reason for that being, that to alter proclaimed Dogmas historically taught, is to create a NEW Christ. Christ has revealed Himself, do not allow ANYONE to foist a New One on you. Base people form New Christ's every day, to match their human, carnal Apetites. Be very wary of following that Christ. He is wantonly seeking to betray the True Lord who is seeking your loyal fidelity to His lawful, unchanging Church.

I have researched - what you clear vainglorious rebbles, have sneeringly derided in your remarks upon this website. Women are lay members of the Holy Catholic Church, or consecrated celibate Brides of Christ. You commenters have no right to devalue what has already been taught and set in Motion by the Church that KNEW Christ.

As stated elsewhere on this website, Clerical Celibacy is a historic accuracy. During the Old Covenant, there were literally hundreds of Priests to serve the Temple in Jerusalem, and during the time a Priest was involved in the Temple Sacrifices, it was forbidden for him to be sexually active with his wife. Due to the extraordinary surplace of Priests, often a Priest (such as St Elizabeth's husband Zacarius) only received a call to serve once in every couple of years. YET, it was an order, that once that service was required, he must refrain from sexual conduct. Today, of course, the Priesthood is different. Each Priest, is called to offer the Sacrifice, and be in the Lord's Presence, every single day. THAT is the historic reasoning behind enforced celibacy.

Now, on to other matters. It is extremely dangerous to question the matters regarding the historicity of the norms of authentic Catholicism. You are clearly unaware as to the remainder of the Laws set in motion during the History of the Holy Church of God. I give you these links to watch. If you wish to be relieved from your lack of obediance to the Authorative legal structure. Perhaps you choose to be damned to Hell. Women have NEVER served Christ in a clerical capacity. Look to ancient Judaism, and the early Rabicical Priesthood. Christ is God. If He denies women the right to approach His Altar in that Capacity, it is not for us to muse otherwise. God will strike down any who question His requests. Be more obediant to the ancient Scriptures. When you read the Old Testament, remember that It was Christ who appeared before Abraham, it is Christ who rained down fire on Sodom and Gomorrah.

Genesis 19:24
And the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of Heaven.

As you can see above - there are MANY passages of Scripture depicting more than one member of the Triune Godhead is present throughout the Texts.

Visit my Google plus page - There is a link discussing the Trinity in the Old Testament.

If it were not sanctioned 2000 years ago, it is due to God's Divine Authoratative WILL, and therefore not a matter for complaint by a troubled narcissistic world.

The Temple is a place for Worship of God. Christ came not to alter the Law, but to reinstigate TRUE worship of God. Christ is the TRUE image of the Eternal Triune Godhead, He said "The Father and I are ONE" clearly stating that He is of the same mind, and intent as His Father, the STRICT God of the Old Testament.

Christ's Words are Truth. That means they can not be tampered with to obtain a revised set of Clerics more serving of rebellious satanists than the True God of Scripture whose wrath fell down on the Levitical Priests who dared to approach Him incorrectly and irreligiously garbed.

Lord have Mercy on YOU. True Mercy, that you may appreciate the Sacrifice of Your God on the Holy Cross of your redemption. Your sins are numerous, your wishes are base, and you really have no notion of how abhorrant revised Doctrines and Dogmas ARE to the God who LOVES you!

Stay away from all that is ritually impure. God has had His FILL of the wantoness and the agression of the irreverent Temple worshippers of the Ba'al that the apostates have instilled in His Place.

The Abomination of Desolation is in place. Run to Him, serve HIM, seek NOT to alter His Will or Laws to flatter your OWN inclinations.

If you serve Him, through His lawful, legitimate Church - you will be saved the wrath of God terrifying you when you meet Him face to face.

Feel free to examine the evidence.

God loves you - Don't despise His statutes. Say "God's WILL be done - not my own." Say also "Into Thy hand's, Oh Lord, I commend MY Spirit, this day and always! "
